Diabetes in general

Goals for 6-7 years old

Children should be able to state in their own words that

  • they have diabetes.
  • their body needs insulin.
    • the insulin they need must be injected into their thigh or abdomen.
    • when they receive insulin and eat regularly they feel well and can live like other children.

Children should know that:

  • diabetes is a lifelong condition that won t go away.
  • diabetes is not contagious.
  • no one knows for sure why some people get diabetes.
    • it is not the child s or anybody else s fault that he or she got diabetes.

* Goals for 8-9 years old

Children should be able to state in their own words that:

  • they have diabetes.
  • their body needs insulin
    • the insulin their body needs must be injected into their thigh or abdomen.
    • when they take insulin and eat regularly they feel well and can do the same things other children do.

Children should know that:

  • diabetes is a lifelong condition that won t go away.
  • diabetes is not contagious.
  • no one knows for sure why some people get diabetes.
    • it is not the child s or anybody else s fault that he or she got diabetes.

* Goals for 10-11 years old

Children should be able to state in their own words:

  • that they have diabetes.
  • that their body needs insulin
    • that the insulin their body needs must be injected into their high or abdomen.
  • the function of insulin.
  • that diabetes is a lifelong condition.
  • that diabetes is not contagious.

•   that no one knows for sure why some people get diabetes. 1 Goals for 12-13 years old

In order to understand diabetes more completely, children should know about the:

  • major internal organs.
  • digestive system.
  • function of the pancreas.
  • pancreas and the effect of insulin on the body.

Goals for 16-17 years old

The older teen should know how the body works in order to understand the full implications of having diabetes. Teenagers should be familiar with all major body organs and systems, including the heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, circulatory system, digestive system and the way in which nutrients are used by the body.
